Outside Pixie Dust, Saturday late morning

Brooke had a ton of things to do today, because it was the first day of break for her and she would rather get everything done now rather than have to worry about anything for the rest of it, and she had orders to finish and fabric to pick up and it would all have to wait one second while she stopped to see the little girl staring at the outside of Pixie Dust.

Tabitha was waiting patiently, and as soon as she saw her mom stop and look with her, she grinned and said, "I knew I'd find you here!"

Brooke tried not to look too weirded out by that, which totally didn't work. "You were looking for me?"

"You weren't in the park and I still need ice cream," she explained. "You're not trying to get out of it, are you?" She was prepared to pout if necessary.

"Noooo, of course not," she frowned, crouching down to get on the little girl's level. "But I have a question, and it might sound strange."

Tabitha nodded. "Shoot."

"Why am I buying ice cream?"

She rolled her eyes. "Mooooom, we always have ice cream after the park. And I get two scoops! Because I called that girl on TV too skinny!"

Brooke stared at her.

A lot.

Tabitha tugged on her mom's sleeve.

"I'm sorry, did you just call me 'Mom'?" she asked, still stuck on that part for some reason.

"Yep! 'Cause you won't let me call you by your name like Victoria, remember?"

Okay, that sounded sort of correct. It was just like her mom to not want to be called Grandma. "Okay, um... sweetie, I have two questions. And they're going to be weird ones, too," said Brooke. "What's your name?"

"That's weird."

"Yeah, I know, I told you that."

"Tabitha Elizabeth Davis," she answered, and she wondered if Mommy had hit her head in the park somewhere.

"Okay," Brooke said, and that last name didn't help her out at all. In fact, it sort of worried her. "And for the second weird question, your daddy is...?"

Tabitha shrugged, making a little face when she said something that sounded like "I'unno. You say it doesn't matter and I have good male role models."

There was more staring, though this time Brooke found words. "I'm a single mom?"

"Not always!" Tabitha corrected.

Well, that just sucked. She could see it now, she hooked up with some guy and there was a total accident and he probably cheated on her with Peyton so she was stuck on her own raising a kid. Not that that had ever been a possibility or anything.

Trying not to get whiny about it, Brooke stood and said, "Okay. Come on. Let's get that ice cream. I need it right now."
